Registered Manager (Children's Residential EBD)

Derby DE1

Children's Residential Care | EBD | Therapeutic Framework | NVR | Trauma-Informed | Derby | Ofsted Registered Manager | Children's Homes Regulations | Level 5 Leadership

About the Organisation and the Opportunity

These are two well-established, therapeutically led residential children's homes based in Derby, supporting young people aged 8 to 17 who have experienced trauma, emotional and behavioural difficulties, and significant disruption in their early lives, and who deserve so much more than just a placement. The homes operate within a Non-Violent Resistance (NVR) therapeutic framework, underpinned by attachment theory, which means the approach to behaviour management is genuinely personalised, creative, and grounded in what research tells us works for children who have experienced adversity.

This is a provider where the young person's voice sits at the heart of everything, from care planning through to day-to-day decisions, and where the Responsible Individual works closely alongside the wider team to make sure that happens in practice, not just on paper. Care plans go above and beyond what the local authority provides, drawing on the young person's own views and wishes, and every approach is tailored to the individual because no two young people are the same.

The homes are well-connected within the Derby community, with access to excellent local amenities, leisure facilities, green spaces, and educational provisions, giving young people the same opportunities and life experiences as their peers. This is a provider that invests seriously in its people, its practice, and its therapeutic model, and that investment shows in the quality of care delivered every day.

The Role

This is a Registered Manager position with dual-site responsibility across both homes. You will hold overall accountability for the leadership, compliance, and quality of care across both settings, reporting directly to the Responsible Individual and working in close collaboration with them to ensure outstanding outcomes for every young person in your care.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Taking full accountability for the day-to-day management and operational leadership of both residential children's homes in Derby

  • Ensuring full compliance with the Children's Homes Regulations 2015, Quality Standards, and all Ofsted requirements, including Reg 44 and Reg 45 reporting

  • Leading, supervising, mentoring, and developing your team, delivering direct supervisions and Personal Development Plans (PDPs) that encourage professional growth and progression

  • Developing and reviewing care plans in line with each young person's individual needs, wishes, and the Statement of Purpose, ensuring they remain current, meaningful, and child-centred

  • Managing safeguarding concerns, complaints, and any required reporting to relevant bodies including LADO, Ofsted, and Social Workers with confidence and professionalism

  • Overseeing recruitment, retention, and rota management to ensure both homes are appropriately staffed at all times, working alongside HR as required

  • Managing occupancy and admissions thoughtfully, paying close attention to the existing group dynamic and the needs of young people already in placement

  • Maintaining the financial viability and integrity of both homes through careful management of resources and budgets

  • Taking on-call responsibilities as required, providing your team with confident, experienced leadership and support

  • Championing a therapeutic, trauma-informed culture across both homes, where every young person is safeguarded, empowered, and supported to reach their full potential

  • Ensuring the voices of young people are heard and meaningfully embedded in every aspect of their care

What We Are Looking for in You

This is not an entry-level management role and we want to be transparent about that, because getting the right person matters enormously to the young people who will be living in these homes. The following are essential requirements:

  • Previous Ofsted registration as a Registered Manager in a children's residential setting is essential, and you must be willing and able to undertake the fit person interview process for registration with this provider

  • A minimum of 2 years' experience in a supervisory position within a children's residential care setting

  • Direct experience of working with children in a residential setting is required, and experience supporting young people with EBD is a significant advantage given the specialist therapeutic nature of both homes

  • Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Residential Childcare (or an equivalent transferable qualification), or demonstrable evidence of working towards it

  • A thorough working knowledge of the Children's Homes Regulations 2015, Quality Standards, safeguarding legislation, and Ofsted inspection frameworks

  • Strong, confident leadership skills with the ability to inspire, motivate, and develop a team working in a demanding and complex environment

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships with young people, families, local authorities, social workers, health professionals, and multi-agency partners

  • Proven organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities across two sites without compromising on quality or compliance

  • Resilience and professional commitment, with a clear understanding of both professional and personal boundaries

  • A genuine passion for improving the lives of young people who have experienced trauma and adversity, and a commitment to giving them the best possible experience of residential care

Why This Role Stands Out

  • Two small, therapeutically focused homes working within a well-established NVR and attachment-based framework, meaning your leadership will have real depth and purpose

  • A Responsible Individual who is actively involved and invested in the quality of care, providing you with genuine support rather than leaving you to manage in isolation

  • A care model that is creative, personalised, and child-centred, with care plans that go further than the minimum required by the local authority

  • An organisation that takes safer recruitment seriously and builds teams of people who are genuinely committed to therapeutic, relationship-based care

  • A Derby location with strong community connections, giving young people access to real opportunities and experiences within their local area

  • A permanent, full-time position with genuine scope to shape, develop, and lead two homes as your own

Essential Requirements Checklist:

  • Previous Ofsted registration as a Registered Manager in children's residential care

  • Minimum 2 years' supervisory experience in children's residential settings

  • Level 5 Leadership and Management (or equivalent / working towards)

  • Direct experience working with children in a residential setting (EBD experience advantageous)

  • Enhanced DBS (or willingness to apply)

  • Right to work in the United Kingdom
