Registered Manager
Children's Residential Care (EBD)
Hull, East Yorkshire (HU4)
£50,000 to £60,000 DOE + Registration Bonus
There are plenty of Registered Manager roles out there, and most of them look a bit the same. This one is different, and I think if you've been in residential childcare long enough, you'll be able to tell why fairly quickly.
A new 3-bed EBD children's residential home is preparing to open in Hull, and the people building it are doing so with real intention.
The leadership behind this matters
The director overseeing this home has over 20 years of experience in residential childcare, they've worked every level of it, from Residential Support Worker through Deputy and Registered Manager, into Regional and Board level positions
The senior leadership team has lived the full journey of this sector, which shapes how they make decisions, how they support their managers, and what they prioritise when they're building something new
This is a provider with a clear philosophy: small homes, well-supported teams, and outcomes that are genuinely meaningful for the young people living there
What you'll be doing from day one
Leading the Ofsted registration process for the home, working through the SC1 and SC2 applications alongside an experienced and accessible Responsible Individual who has done this before
Contributing to the Statement of Purpose, policies, and safeguarding frameworks in a way that reflects how you actually want the home to feel, not just what passes inspection
Completing and contributing to assessments and referrals as the home moves towards opening
Recruiting and building a residential care team you genuinely believe in, people who understand that EBD is relational work, that consistency is the intervention, and that the environment young people come home to every day has a profound effect on their outcomes
Embedding a values-led culture from the outset, one that young people and staff can feel from the moment they walk through the door, rather than something that gets retrofitted after a difficult inspection
The salary, and what it reflects
Opening a home is a meaningfully different undertaking to running one that's already in motion, and this provider understands that. The salary sits between £50,000 and £60,000 depending on your experience, with a bonus paid on successful registration with Ofsted. The investment reflects the weight of the role and the confidence being placed in the person who takes it.
About you
You will either be an experienced Registered Manager in children's residential care, or a Deputy Manager who is ready, properly ready, to step into registration. Either way, you'll understand EBD well enough to know that the work is relational, that it requires genuine thought about how a home feels to the people who live in it, and that culture isn't something you put on a wall.
You'll have:
Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Residential Childcare, or be actively working towards it within Ofsted's requirements
Solid, relevant experience within an Ofsted-regulated children's residential setting, working with children and young people with emotional and behavioural difficulties
A grounded, practised understanding of what good EBD practice looks like day to day, not just what the paperwork says
Confidence leading a team, setting expectations with clarity and warmth, and holding a culture together when things are under pressure
The capability to take a home through registration and the early stages of operation, understanding the SC1 and SC2 process, fit person interviews, and what Ofsted is actually looking for
Why this particular opportunity is worth your attention
Most people who work in residential childcare have, at some point, had a thought along the lines of "if I were setting this place up myself, I'd do it differently." Maybe you'd prioritise the team differently, think harder about how referrals are managed, or just be more deliberate about what the home feels like on an ordinary Wednesday. This is the chance to actually do that, with experienced people around you who are invested in getting it right, and a provider whose model is built around quality over scale.
There is something about being present at the beginning of a home that you genuinely don't get anywhere else. You can see the impact of your decisions properly, in a way that takes much longer when you join something that's already running.
